Ian Williams BDS (Lond) 1991 LDSRCS (Eng) 1991
Ian trained at UCH in London, winning the occlusion prize in his final year. He then went on to do oral surgery and specialist clinics at UCH and an oral cancer clinic in the world renowned Eastman Dental Institute before returning to Exeter and joining the practice in 1992.
He enjoys all aspects of his job, but particularly cosmetic dentistry including crowns, bridges, veneers and dental implants. He is well respected for his dentistry by his peers and patients alike.
Still passionate about Dentistry, Ian is on the committee of the Devon Independent Practitioners Group and has been giving careers advice at local schools for over 25 years. He has recently joined Plymouth University’s Peninsula Dental School working as a Clinical Supervisor, when he can spare the time from his busy practice.
A keen sportsman, he played hockey at county level and coached Isca juniors for 7 years, guiding them to Devon and West of England success.
He also spent ten years helping the charity Chernobyl Children’s Life-Line http://www.ccll.org.uk treating victims of the disaster, which he found particularly rewarding.
Martin Day BDS (Lond) 1989 LDSRCS (Eng) 1989
Martin qualified at Kings College Hospital in 1989 and joined the Practice as a partner in 1996.
Alongside providing a very high standard of both general and cosmetic dentistry Martin provides treatments for occlusal problems, tempero-mandibular joint disorders (TMD) and headaches. He has a keen interest in sports dentistry and is one of the few dentists in the UK accredited in the provision of Under Armour Performance Mouthguards.
Martin is married to Nicola, who is also a dentist, and has three beautiful daughters.
His main interests are sport, travel and cooking, and having given up rugby through old age is now tackling golf, tennis and kitesurfing.
Anna Bearman BDS (Lond) 2001, MFGDP(UK) 2007
Anna became a Partner in the Southernhay Dental Practice in May 2014. She qualified from Guy’s and St Thomas’, London in 2001 and attained a Postgraduate Dental Diploma (MFGDP(UK)) in 2007.
Anna has worked in General Dental Practice in and around Exeter for the past 13 years and has built a reputation for delivering clinical excellence in all aspects of cosmetic and restorative dentistry. She is keenly interested in caring for those with anxiety concerns and takes great pride and pleasure in ensuring that her patients have a positive experience at the dentist.
In 2008 Anna worked for a period in Ethiopia as part of a specialist team for the charity Facing Africa treating and rehabilitating patients with the horrific disease called Noma.
She is married to Chris, a serving Royal Marine, and they have two young children. Her other hobbies include skiing, mountain walking, scuba diving and playing netball for the Exeter league.
Alexandra Murray BDS (Birm) 2012 MFDS RCPS (Glasg)
Alexandra joined the practice in August 2014. She qualified from Birmingham University and completed her MFDS qualification in 2018.
Alexandra has worked in General Dental Practice locally before spending a year as a Senior House Officer in the Oral Surgery Department at the RD&E Hospital.
She enjoys all aspects of dentistry, but particularly enjoys helping patients overcome their dental anxiety.
Alex shares her home with her husband, Matt and their much-loved miniature Schnauzer, Millie. She enjoys spending her spare time walking on Dartmoor, camping, travelling and keeping fit.
Anna-Marie Smith B.Ch.D Stell 2000
Anna-Marie enjoys all aspects of dentistry, having completed further training in implantology and sedation, but her real passion lies with patient care and communication; particularly patients with dental anxiety or phobia.
Anna-Marie and her husband Tom have three lively young who all attend school in Exeter, and if she ever gets any spare time she enjoys running and triathlons; having completed her first half Iron Man event in 2017.
James Evans BDS
James qualified as a dentist from Peninsula Dental School (Universities of Plymouth & Exeter) in 2011 and holds degrees in other subject areas including engineering.
James believes very passionately that patients should be treated with kindness and consideration. He offers a calm, unhurried approach to treatment which is particularly effective when putting nervous patients at ease.
He is a passionate believer in minimally invasive restorative dentistry using modern techniques combined with prevention and education to help his patients achieve the highest standard of dental health.
James finds the attention to detail and the level of care he offers to his patients builds confidence and trust.
Specialist Oral & Maxillofacial Surgeon
Michael D Esson BDS FDSRCS (Ed) BM MRCS (RCS Eng) FRCS (RCS Eng)
Michael joined the practice as a Specialist Oral & Maxillofacial Surgeon in September 2013 taking referrals for dental implants and surgical dentistry. He graduated as a dentist from Birmingham Dental School in 1989, embarking on a career in Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery. He worked in Birmingham, South Wales and Bristol, attained Fellowship in Dental Surgery from the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh in 1993, before training as a doctor at Southampton Medical School, qualifying in 1998. He worked as a trainee in General & Acute Medicine, Accident & Emergency, General Surgery, Orthopaedics and Plastic Surgery. A Travelling Fellowship was spent in Vancouver, Canada gaining experience in Plastic, Reconstructive and Cleft Surgery.
He attained Membership of the Royal College of Surgeons of England In 2001, before completing Specialist Training in Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery in the South West, rotating between Torbay Hospital, Derriford Hospital, Plymouth and the Royal Devon & Exeter Hospital. He has a particular interest in Dental Implants, Jaw Bone Grafting, Surgical Dentistry, Facial Deformity, Maxillofacial Trauma, Salivary Gland Disease and Head & Neck Cancer. In 2005, he attained the Fellowship of the Royal College of Surgeons of England in Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery. He was awarded Specialist Status in Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery by the General Medical Council in 2006. In 2008, he was appointed as Consultant Oral & Maxillofacial Surgeon in the Royal Devon & Exeter Hospital, working also at North Devon District Hospital, Axminster Hospital and Exeter Nuffield Hospital.
He is married, has five children and his main interests are sporting, in particular squash and cycling. He is a keen cook and loves to travel.
